Several years ago, as a manager in a major US corporation, I focused on the key issues facing the company. These objectives were improving operational safety, and growing the business. I searched for ways that I could help make improvements. This search eventually led me to a three-day seminar that literally changed my life. The seminar taught a systematic, data-oriented method for managing people that depended upon the intelligent use of positive reinforcement to produce continuous, incremental improvement.
I could clearly see the need for this technology. The day-to-day performance of people, I now knew, was the major factor to address in making businesses successful. What I needed to develop was the ability to articulate to others what I knew to be valuable. Some people I talked with “got it,” but many did not. I knew, though, that turning people on to working toward the goals of the organization was the answer to the problems we faced.
As usual, persistence paid off. With the unwavering support of my wife, and with several key alliances in the company (and by learning to explain my thoughts much more clearly), I was able to secure corporate funding for a pilot project. This project would evaluate this people management technology in the effort to improve employee injury rates (a huge, multimillion-dollar opportunity!).
