Thanet Mencap Society
Description
The Society was formed just over 40 years ago by a group of concerned parents who had decided that it was time something was done to provide better services and help for their children who had a learning disability . From this informal group a youth club was formed and outings organised. With social meetings this started to help the children and give each other support. Ten years later this group having grown considerably was formalised and affiliated to the Royal Society, thus Thanet Mencap Society was born.
Over 30 years later the Society has over 400 members and in addition to social events and outings we now ha ve a day centre, work opportunities projects, 7 residences plus sports, leisure and Special Olympic groups.
The Society established it's own shop and tea rooms, formed not only to raise funds but also provide people with a learning disability the opportunity to work with the public in an everyday environment. Also with the work opportunity in mind the Society opened 3 workshops to produce goods for sale in the shop and other outlets in Thanet.
