Hokitika, New Zealand Accommodation : Bed and Breakfast Accommodation Offered By Teichelmann's B&B, NZ, B and B

Description

Hokitika, on the West Coast of New Zealand, has had a colourful and interesting history. Its origins date back to 1865 when it was a rip-roaring goldfields capital and important river port offering accommodation to immigrants, settlers and travelers alike. Revell Street, once the busiest and most important, featured over 84 hotels, three opera houses plus the usual array of business premises along its 'Crooked Mile' meandering along the beachfront.

As a riverport it rivaled those of much larger cities such as Dunedin and Auckland as an immigration gateway and revenues for imports and exports. Steamers on the Dunedin - Melbourne run made Hokitika a calling point before leaving New Zealand. However with the harbour being within the Hokitika River system, heavy surf, tides, weather and having to navigate a constantly changing river bar; it was extremely dangerous for shipping and so consequently over 43 vessels came to grief on the beach front facing the town centre.
