D.S. TechStar, Inc. is a designer and fabricator of engineering products for bridges, tunnels, and architechtural structures. The company was incorporated in 1990 by D.D. Brown, D.S. Brown (not associated with the D.S. Brown Company), and W.M. Brown. In the early 1960's, The D.S. Brown Company in North Baltimore, Ohio developed the first compression seal and later, designed and marketed modular expansion joint systems, strip seal expansion joint systems, elastomeric bearing systems, and pot bearing systems. These products have been marketed and sold around the world. D.S. TechStar was the first company to successfully introduce the putty-filled shock transmission unit, a device that temporarily strengthens bridges during seismic events. First installed in Pennsylvania in 1996, The TechStar STU was recently the corner stone of the seismic retrofit to the Carquiney Bridge near San Francisco, California.
