Description
It is estimated that the cost of caring for Americans afflicted with Autism is over $12 billion annually--with no end in sight.
Autism is a genetic, neurological disorder that affects approximately one in 500 children in the United States, making it one of the most common developmental disorders. It is more common than childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, or other neurological disorders such as Down's Syndrome. It affects children from every racial, ethnic and socioeconomic background. The annual costs associated with treating and caring for this population in the U. S. alone has been estimated at $12 billion.
While normal in appearance, Autistic children remain remote and disconnected from the world. They exist in a constant state of confusion, fear, frustration and pain. As a result of this distorted reality, many engage in ritualistic, aggressive and self-destructive behavior. Any deviation from routine may trigger an uncontrollable rage that can result in physical injuries. Many will require a lifetime of institutionalization by the tender age of 13.
