On the first day of year 2000 a new era began in the history of Hungarian higher education. A large (even by European standards) new university was established, with Gödöllõ as the center of federation of five outstanding institutions of high renown which used to operate independently. This new institution gives high priority to agricultural and rural development.
The new university could not have given a more fitting gift to the nation of Hungary, which is celebrating its thousand-year anniversary then by taking the name of king Szent István (Saint Stephen).
It is important that well all do our best for the success of our new university. We intend to become a welcoming professional-cultural center which is acknowledged at home and all over the world for its competent professors, well-prepared teaching and research staff, and the students' professional skills. The schools of Szent István University, operating in Budapest, Gödöllõ and Jászberény, a model farm and research institute of almost 1000-hectares, a thousand teachers and two thousands other staff members, provide training for more than twenty-four thousand students. They can obtain university or college-level diplomas in 40 different undergraduate and graduate majors and a PhD degree in ten scientific fields. Eight hundred students come to us from different countries of the world. They can study in Hungarian, English, German, French and Russian. Our university has high-level training, and research activities, scientific and cultural relations with 90 institutions in 42 countries of 5 continents. Our honorary doctors are among the best scientists in the world. The aim of university is to build further contents based on meaningful joint training and research period.
