Description
The Alexander Technique is a practical method developed by F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) for improving the way we 'use' ourselves in the activities of everyday life, in the home, at school or work, or during leisure activities.
The Technique can be learnt by adults and children and can help in as many ways as there are individuals. It does not seek to 'treat' specific ailments but through learning how to change potentially damaging habits, the therapeutic benefits of applying it are considerable.
The Alexander Technique is based on the principle that each of us functions as a whole and, first, to effect change that leads to improvement, we must learn to consciously prevent unnecessary and harmful habits. For example, reacting too quickly to stimuli, unduly stiffening our muscles and putting too much effort into our activities. Because these habits occur repeatedly through our everyday life and hence become unconscious, part of the process of learning and applying the Alexander Technique is to become aware of what it is that we are actually doing.
