- The "Sweetheart Tree" is hand painted and personalized, with your sweetheart's name, on an antique slate roofing shingle that may have spent 100 years on an American roof. The slates that I use have been taken off old barns, sheds and houses that are being torn down. The slate itself was most likely mined from the Peach Bottom slate quarries near my home town of Whiteford, Maryland.
