Sweeneys Oughterard House Web Site
Description
Sweeney's hotel has been operated by the Sweeney - Higgins family since my grandfather Edward bought a hotel in the village in 1913. Edward ran that hotel until after the second world war, and also purchased and ran another hotel in the village. In the mid 1950's he purchased Oughterard house which he renamed Sweeney's and ran it as his sole hotel. My parents joined him and my grandmother in the running, and I joined my parents in 1971.
The house is a small Georgian country house which has been added to over the years. We have some 200 year plus old beech trees in our gardens and a selection of azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, magnolias, and many other mainly early summer shrubs around the lawns.
The house is decorated with period furniture mostly Victorian and Edwardian with some Georgian pieces. We have a collection of paintings and sculptures on view covering some of Irelands best mid to late 20th century artists. Most bedrooms have one or more original works of art.
