There are many facts to the lady: veteran politician, brilliant academician, writer, poet and a great philosopher. The philosophy of Vedanta has been her guiding light and the desire to explore the ‘anant’ (eternity)still fills her with zeal and vigour.
She was born in Lucknow on June 22, 1919 in a Kashmiri Pandit family. Her father Pandit Badri Prasad Shinglu was a great artist and musician and was considered an authority on Indian classical music.He was also renowned poet in Urdu and English.
Schooling at Lahore was followed by an M.A. in English Literature and then in Sanskrit from the Lucknow University. The patriotic atmosphere of the time did not leave her untouched and she joined the Congress in 1940, and jumped into the freedom struggle.
