- The Mission of the Susan L. Curtis Foundation is to build the individual character, self-confidence, and self-esteem of economically disadvantaged Maine children through the provision of tuition-free high quality camping, experiential education, and social experiences. Camp Susan Curtis is the only program sponsored by the Susan L. Curtis Foundation. Founded in 1970 as a non-profit charitable organization, Camp Susan Cutis was named for the daughter of Governor Kenneth and Pauline Curtis following Susan’s death from cystic fibrosis. Camp is a magical and fun place for Maine children. It is the only summer camp dedicated exclusively to the needs of economically disadvantaged children. Children participate in a variety of experiential and educational activities. Camp Susan Curtis is a accredited by the American Camping association. Each year, the Foundation and the Volunteer Board of Trustees raises money to send over 500 children to camp. The effort of the Board, and our supporters throughout Portland and Maine work many charitable hours on behalf of he children we serve.
