Edwin Kiefer was born in Akron, Ohio, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. By a rapid series of self-motivating events, he had the honor of being a participant on the historic Gold Patrol of the submarine USS TROUT. This was within a matter of weeks after the outbreak of war between America and Japan.
