Alcohol in Space?

The interstellar gas cloud Sagittarius B contains massive amounts of liquor, proving that Sagittarian’s really know how to party. Okay, before Lindsey Lohan tries to become an astronaut, let me clarify that the substance found is really vinyl alcohol, a key compound found in organic molecular reactions. Finding this substance in abundance in an interstellar gas cloud suggests that life can be found elsewhere in the universe. The amount of vinyl alcohol found in the gas cloud is said to be in the billion, billion, billions of liters. That is one heck of a lot of zeros. The discovery of this complex substance in space is said to be important to our scientific understanding of how organic molecules started to form after the big bang occurred. Scientific types theorize that complex organic molecules could have begun forming within massive clouds of gas and dust if they happen to be within the vicinity of a young star. The young star’s heat could possibly evaporate the ice that has formed on the dust thus creating a suitable medium for the creation of non-gas phase substances. The prevailing nonscientific theory of how complex molecular molecules formed thus enabling life to occur is “God”.

Armageddon II for Real?

A pair of asteroid just whizzed by earth scaring the crap out of a few scientists who doubt that even Bruce Willis could save us from a dual asteroid collision. The two asteroids passed within several Earth to moon distances and featured two spinning rocks, one about double the size of the other. It is still unknown if Hollywood will use this idea to make Armageddon II giving much needed work to Ben Affleck and Ving Rhames. As of this past May, NASA has discovered 5474 Near Earth Objects in Space, with 800 of these asteroids and comets being big enough to cause catastrophic damage if they happen to collide with our planet. There is currently no real official plan out, if an imminent collision is discovered, but suggested options do include nuclear missiles, space tugs, solar sails, and spinning space ships that shoot laser beams.

Solar System Not Round?

Astronomers recently discovered that the solar system is actually dented instead of perfectly round. Measurements of the heliosphere by the space probe Voyager 1 indicate that outer shape of our solar system is more oblong than round. The Heliosphere, for those of you who are not in the know, is the magnetic bubble that surrounds our solar system. It is created by solar gas and stretches out into the far reaches of space becoming the outer limits of out star system. It is unclear whether the solar system’s mother loves it just the way it is or if that it wished for a more perfectly round system. The Voyager 1 was launched in 1977 and is destined to become the first manmade object to leave our solar system, get taken in by a race of machine like beings, and then come back to earth looking for its creator.
