The parish was established in the early 1970s. Since then especially in recent years Thornton has expanded with the introduction of new housing estates

Sometimes St Nicholas Owen is overshadowed by its neighbouring parishes of St. John's Breck Road,Poulton and Sacred Heart in Thornton. It may be smaller but it is a friendly small parish which is always ready to welcome new faces.

There is children's liturgy every week where the children of the parish are invited to be active whilst learning about the message of the Bible.
