Description

About St Joseph's

The birth of the pastoral service began in 1974 when, at the request of Cardinal Heenan, Fr David Wilson started full time pastoral service helping people with learning difficulty.

The centre was officially opened by Cardinal Hume in May 1977 and was called 'The Pastoral Office for Handicapped People'. Fr David Wilson was the first director of the centre, and with a small team, worked tirelessly to make it a leading organisation in its field. He resigned in 1986 and was followed by a succession of young dedicated and hard-working priests, who for a variety of reasons soon returned to parish life.

Rosemary McCloskey was appointed in 1992. She had been part of Fr David Wilson's original team on secondment from the Spastics Society (now called SCOPE). With the appointment of June Edwards, later on becoming the Catechetical Co-ordinator to assist her, it took two years in restoring and rebuilding the organisation. Rosemary worked tirelessly and with enthusiasm for 11 years until her retirement in the summer of 2003.
