Description
History and Timeline
T he St. Francis Community of Columbia, Missouri began in 1982 with the opening of "Loaves and Fishes" Soupkitchen. The kitchen serves a hot evening meal at 5 pm seven nights a week and remains operational to this day. In 1983, we opened a rental house to offer hospitality to homeless people. In the summer of 1984, we were able to purchase the current St. Francis House for men. We offer overnight hospitality to tweleve men and also showers and laundry facilities for homeless men who may live in camps or in their cars. The House serves breakfast at 6am to 8:30am every morning for 30-35 people. An evening meal is served at 8 pm 7 nights a week for 30-45 people and lunch is also served for 30-50 people on Sundays.
In 1991, another house was purchased four houses away from St. Francis House. The St. Francis Lois Bryant House, named in honor and memory of the same, provides housing and hospitality for women and children and a center from where neighborhood and homeless women can do laundry, get showers and clothes.
Our Community
O ur community is made up of a group of eight individuals who live in the two houses and in other houses on our block. No one receives a salary. All work is volunteered. We live as a community of people committed to serving the abandoned and the sick. For twenty years we have done care for homeless people at the end of their lives and have been privileged to care for and bury over 30 people in that time. The majority of our guests are seriously mentally ill. Many have schizophenia or bipolar disease. Some eventually get medical care. Some live with us for years after being abandonded by the mental health system. Most are not able to work. Some had been in long term facilities and dumped out because of deinstitutionalization.
