- The Steinhatchee River is a short river in the Big Bend region of Florida. It flows for 28 miles forming the boundary of Dixie County and Taylor County to the Gulf of Mexico. About one mile of the river goes underground as a subterranean river near U.S. Route 19. Eight miles from the river's mouth is Steinhatchee Falls, where the river drops several feet. The Stein in Steinhatchee is pronounced as if it were spelled Steen, rather than Stine. The river has also been known as the Hittenhatchee, Esteenhatchee, and Isteenhatchee.
