Description
Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., the State Oil Company of Suriname, was founded on December 13, 1980, as a limited liability company under Surinamese Law. The Republic of Suriname is the sole shareholder. Staatsolie has the mining rights to explore for and produce hydrocarbons in Suriname. It can exercise this right as an independent operator or in cooperation with other oil companies. The initial idea was to have Staatsolie as an advisory body to the government, with the principal task of monitoring the activities of oil companies performing petroleum activities in Suriname. However, in its drive to contribute more to the Surinamese economy, Staatsolie took the development of earlier made onshore discoveries into its own hands. With the inauguration of the refinery in 1997, it became an integrated petroleum company that now employs 640 people. The turnover of more than a hundred million US dollars makes Staatsolie a sizable contributor to the economy of Suriname.
Staatsolie has two main functions: first, to perform its commercial petroleum activities, and second, to act on behalf of the State in attracting and negotiating contracts with international oil companies interested in investing in the Surinamese oil industry, and monitoring their activities.
Staatsolie’s petroleum operations began onshore in Suriname. The company’s crude production amounts to 11,500 barrels per day (end 2004) from two fields: the Tambaredjo and the Calcutta field. The main production comes from the Tambaredjo field that was taken into production in 1982. In 2003 a discovery was made in the neighboring Calcutta block where full scale production development activities will be completed in 2006. The remaining proven reserves at year-end 2004 are calculated at 85 MMBLS (million barrels): 69 MMBLS in the Tambaredjo Field and 16 MMBLS in the Calcutta Field.
