Description
What is Springfield Rewind?
Springfield Rewind is a rephotography project focusing on Springfield, Illinois. Each page of the site features an archive photo of a building or street scene in Springfield from at least twenty years ago, some as much as 100 years ago. By moving the mouse arrow over the old photo, you will see what that building or street looks like in the present day from the same angle. The image files are very large, so if you are using a dial-up connection, allow several seconds for both images to load.
Where do you find the old photos?
Most of the archived photos used so far have been purchased from the Sangamon Valley Collection at Lincoln Library. The SVC is a great resource for all things historical in and around Springfield. Special thanks to Curt, Keith, and Linda for all the help with the archive materials that I use here. Please - If you have any older photos of Springfield, take them to the SVC on the 3rd floor of Lincoln Library and let the staff scan them so they can be saved and shared.
If you’ve seen a guy downtown with a digital camera and a stack of paper on your lunch hour, it was probably me. After I get the scans of the old photos on a CD from the SVC, I print them out to use as a reference. I mark several points on the printouts to help me figure out where to stand, how to line the shot up, and which lens to use. I usually take 10-20 shots at each location with slightly different angles and camera settings, then find the closest match when I process the ‘rephoto’. I get asked if I’m a tourist a lot - and right after the tornados, I was asked if I was with FEMA.
