Sportsman's Campground and Cabins in Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Description

Our area, including the Weminuche Wilderness just north of us, covers about 1.8 million acres of spectacular mountain scenery. The wilderness area, one of the largest in the country, is accessed by foot or horseback only - no motorized vehicles or bicycles are permitted. Unbelievable scenery including many 13,000 and 14,000 foot peaks, abundant wildlife and solitude reward those who venture into the Weminuche. The beautiful San Juan national forest surrounds and includes the Weminuche Wilderness. Experience the beauty and remoteness of the area from your vehicle or mountain bike on any of the well maintained gravel forest service roads in the area. Many miles of hiking and horseback trails of varying difficulty are within a few miles of our campground, some right from the campground.

Many miles of rivers including the Piedra River, and it's tributaries, flow through National Forests in our area. Williams Reservoir, located 5 miles north of us, offers a scenic backdrop for some great fishing. Our rivers and lakes are subject to varying flows due to rain in the summer and snowpack runoff during the spring.

The weather in our area varies greatly from season to season and day to day as a result of the mountains. We are in a semi-arid area with normally abundant snowfall (about 450 inches at Wolf Creek Pass 20 miles east of Pagosa Springs), dry early summer and fall with some monsoon rains during late July and August. Wildfires are common (and natural for a healthy forest) during the summer. Most fires in our area usually end up being small and go out on their own. The forest service closely monitors any fires to best serve the forest.
