Title
Spirit of Wood - Handcarved Fine Art by Alex MacLeod
Description
As a young boy, I was inspired by a magazine article about an artist named Wyland, who was doing painting of whales and marine life on large buildings. It was around this time that i started doing sketches of whales and dolphins. Although I did not begin wood sculpting until the age of 19, I have always wanted to carve and I remember trying with a knife as a kid, but being frustrated at the slow pace. I have always been inspired and in awe of the ocean. I never like to be far from it, as I enjoy surfing and windsurfing.
Looking back, it is not surprising that my childhood sketches led me into wood sculptues, as I grew up around my family's forestry business. This always reminded me of the value and usefulness of trees. What better medium for wildlife art than something that is purely nature; wood. Also when i think of all the other artforms that I could have became involved in, I am proud to be doing one that I feel is least affected by commercialism.
Some people ask me what my favourite piece to make is? Lately it seems that it is anything new and exciting. Regardless of the subject, my goal is to make something that people can relate to and that is inspiring to look at. Many seem surprised at how I began carving at such a young age, and developed my skills so quickly. I think everyone has the ability to do something amazing in life. The key factor for me has been overcoming the idea that I can't do it. Anything seems possible without a cloud of doubt over one's head. The real challenge is in balancing and juggling art, business, family and play. An Italian sculptor whom I worked with for a short time always used to say to me, "Don't be afraid to take away the wood; if you mess up, then start over, but don't be afraid to take away the wood."
