Description
The spinal cord is the largest collection of nerves in the body, carrying nerve impulses to and from the brain to the rest of the body. It is 18 inches long and extends from the base of the brain down to the middle of the back. Together with the brain, the spinal cord comprises the central nervous system and controls all voluntary movements, such as speech and walking, and involuntary movements such as blinking and breathing.
The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by the spinal column, which is comprised of rings of bone called vertebrae. The vertebrae are named according to location.
The seven vertebrae in the neck are called the Cervical Vertebrae. The top vertebra is called C-1, the next is C-2, etc.
