SPF® fabrics are UV rated and tested according to rigid US testing protocols and standards, which include 40 home launderings and 100 hours of UV exposure. What this means is that SPF® fabrics effectively block at least 97% of UV during the equivalent of two years of normal wear tear. We UV test every dye-lot of fabric and provide you with documentation of those test results to insure that our claims are correct and consistent. In a major university study, scientists tested over 256 types of clothing that people wear everyday and found that only 40% provided a safe amount of protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Of those 40%, the best were probably too hot for summer wear: polyester, wool, and silk. (BMC Dermatology, Oct 2001). “Sunlight that filters through clothing may not burn or tan your skin, but it can still cause cancer,” says James Spencer, MD, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. A recent Swedish study published in the Archives of Dermatology notes an alarming rise in skin cancers in places normally covered by clothes.
