Why Alpacas?........Paul and I purchased land, 17 acres of open cornfields, to escape the confines of a residential development and to become gentleman, and (woman), farmers. Initially our livestock operation included raising Thoroughbred horses and Labrador Retriever dogs. After building our house and a barn with fenced pastures we began our livestock adventure. It wasn’t the return on investment we were focused on so much as the country lifestyle surrounded by the animals we loved and admired. Raising Labs proved to be a lot of fun, and I had the good fortune to be able to purchase from and
breed to top East Coast breeders to produce great hunting/show stock and super family pets. Breeding horses was a different story. Definitely not easy and sometimes bordering on the dangerous. After incurring incredible vet and breeding expenses, not to mention being bitten, stepped on, and thrown, we took a breather and wondered if raising equines was for us. Being a devoted, total horse lover, I dutifully toiled on until I was seriously kicked in the back. Lying in the hospital, barely able to breathe due to broken ribs and a bruised spine, did it for me – thus our horse breeding operation met its demise.
After recovering from my injury, the combination of having a beautifully built barn and available open pastures coupled with the pangs of desire to become a farmer started our search for the perfect livestock. We looked at beef cows, pigs and even shrimp farming! But being true animal lovers we quickly streered away from the possibilities of raising spiny Crustaceans in our backyard. At the time both Paul and I were both full-time professionals with long hours spent at our offices, so we were looking for an animal with a good temperament that would be relatively easy to breed, birth and maintain. As our farm does not stretch for hundreds of acres, the livestock of choice would have to be able to be maintained on limited pasture space.During our search we met a relative of ours (by
