About the SCASA Website

Before continuing to read this page, be warned that it does get fairly technical. It is aimed primarily at those that know at least a little about web technologies.

How does it work?

The layout of the SCASA website is controlled entirely by a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). This removes all the formatting from the page itself, and places it into a seperate file. This results in an easy to read and process XHTML file that can easily be edited. The style sheet specifies the colours to be used, the background image, and the position of some of the elements. Each page has three basic parts:

Why bother?

The web is intended to be accessible from any type of device, not limited to a single web browser. Designing a site that only works in Internet Explorer may not seem a problem if 95% of the visitors to the site use Internet Explorer, but you have instantly lost 5% of the potential visitors. There are also generally more problems with this. Sites designed with a particular browser in mind generally only work with a particular version of that browser, so need to be completely rewritten when a new version is released. This is not a good use of time.
