Southeast Bloodhound Rescue Inc

Description

Southeast Bloodhound Rescue is a non-profit public charity 501(c) corporation , volunteer organization which helps bloodhounds that have, for one reason or another, found themselves homeless. When a bloodhound no longer has a loving home, rescue steps in to help find one for the hound. Southeast Bloodhound Rescue is an organization that does whatever it can to help re-home needy bloodhounds in the Southeastern region (which includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, , Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Tennessee and North Carolina). We also assist in other regions of the country that are currently without an organized bloodhound rescue. Southeast Bloodhound Rescue is made up of a network of volunteers living throughout the United States. These volunteers donate their money, time, transportation and homes to bloodhound rescue simply for love of the breed. No one in our organization receives payment for the services they donate.

Absolutely!! Rescue networks around the United States re-home literally tens of thousands of dogs each and every year. And many of these dogs are bloodhounds. Some of these unfortunate hounds were purchased as “cute, long-eared puppies” impulsively from pet stores, newspapers ads, or acquaintances by people who didn’t understand what they were getting into. No one told them their “cute” little puppy would, at 6 months of age, stand approximately 21 inches at the shoulder and weight over 50 pounds. Others are turned in because the purchaser of this cute, long-eared baby did not realize their growing hound would produce (and share generously) about a quart of drool/slobber a day. Some hounds become homeless due to an owner’s death, family crisis or divorce. Some are turned into local animal shelters because they have become “too much trouble” and are just no longer wanted. And finally, some bloodhounds are picked up by animal control as strays because of owner negligence. These hounds’ owners did not realize that “a loose bloodhound is a gone bloodhound.” When a bloodhound picks up an interesting scent, it will follow it to its conclusion, even if the end of the trail is three counties away from their home!

Firstly, we cannot guaranty the rescue is a pure-bred bloodhound in most cases, as there are no papers with the dog. However, rescues are easily identifiable as bloodhounds. Because of limited foster space, our organization is usually unable to take in dogs that are obvious “bloodhound mixes”. (We do, however, assist local shelters and owners of bloodhound mixes by listing their hounds in a “mix” section of our BLOODHOUNDS AVAILABLE section, when we do not have available foster space.) Also, there are very few puppies that end up in rescue. Most of the hounds placed through Southeast Bloodhound Rescue are teenaged or adult hounds (between the ages of 1 & 2 years). Each rescue is an individual case. Some rescues are surrendered to our organization by their owners. With this type of rescue, we can provide the adoptive parents with medical histories, temperament issues and information on the type of training the hound has already been through. However, many of our rescues come to us through public and private animal shelters. With this latter type of rescue, there is very seldom any information which can be passed on to the adoptive parents. Southeast Bloodhound Rescue attempts to identify any problems with the hounds up for adoption, concerning both health and temperament. However, with an unknown history, occasionally a problem will slip past our organization’s evaluation. A rescued bloodhound can be a wonderful experience, but there can also be risks involved. We do not place rescues on a first come, first served basis. Southeast Bloodhound Rescue attempts to match each rescue to a fitting permanent home.
