GI Bill, College Education,
Description
The inner cities are full of children who are being damaged almost beyond comprehension by the inability to break out of this destructive maze. We are losing them to drugs, incarceration or premature death. We know that almost eight out of ten African American babies in Florida are born into households where the father is missing.
We know children learn by example and from the people around them. The examples of successful males most often seen by inner city children are drug dealers, pimps, "gangsta" rappers and professional athletes. In reality, these children have a better chance in becoming an astronaut as the next Michael Jordan. And it does not take much deep thinking to realize where imitating the others will lead.
Dr. Reddick (STS Founder) recognized that the values learned by the ex-service members of respect for one self and others, teamwork, the importance of education and family values were needed by inner city children. The ex-service members can demonstrate these attributes and can effect the children a positive way. Dr. Reddick, through his position as Director of Defense Transition Services, was able to start the Soldiers to Scholars Program. This program assists ex-military members in getting their college degrees in exchange for them acting as mentors and role models to these at risk children.
