The drum is an instrument that dates back to prehistory; developing out of ancient agricultural rites and the music of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, the beat of the taiko resounds throughout Japanese culture, summoning gods and ancestor’s spirits to ritual entertainments and festivals, driving away evil forces, and giving strength and courage to warriors.
