- Soccer, which in many countries is also known as football, is usually played by two teams of 11 players. Soccer traces it's roots back to ancient types of football played in Europe, but the modern day game developed with the 1863 foundation of The Football Association in England. Before this, most football clubs had their own rules of the game and only on match day would the rules of the upcoming game be chosen by the teams.
