Description
History and mission statement Snow Library was founded with a bequest of $ 5,000.00 from the estate of David Snow to the Town of Orleans in 1876. In 1877, Orleans Town Meeting voted to build Snow's Library on land which previously belonged to the Orleans Academy at the intersection of Rt. 28 and Main Street. The original building was destroyed by fire during a blizzard in February 1952. In 1954, the Town of Orleans built the existing library directly across from the original location of Snow's Library. David Snow's autobiography, From Poverty to Plenty, provides a memorable account of his life as well as a vivid picture of the maritime industry on Cape Cod and in Boston. Snow was truly a self-made man as he started baking and selling sea biscuits to local fishermen as a young boy. He eventually dominated the salt-fish trade of New England and became involved in shipbuilding, real estate and finance in Boston. Snow's book also contains much advice, foremost being "Every young man should keep a diary - If he is not personally interested in it his friends coming after him will be - unless his life is worthless to himself and to society." The Mission of Snow Library is to serve the Town of Orleans as an intellectual and cultural center and to promote the sharing of ideas, an informed citizenry and personal enrichment for people of all ages. The Town of Orleans supports Snow's Library as a public library for all.
