Description

The Molas Pass High Country

In the dry spring of 1879, the largest fire in the history of San Juan County burned 26,000 acres of forest. The fire originated at Purgatory Flats and stormed up Lime Creek, destroying the forest right up to timberline on the flanks of the multi-summited 13,148 foot Grand Turk. The fire burned itself out just a few miles from Silverton and left a wide expanse of treeless terrain. Subsequently, much of the lower and flatter areas were replanted and natural regeneration of the native spruce and fir is occurring, although slowly at this altitude. The area is endowed with beautiful cirques above timberline and long rolling cruisers through the burn. Of course, the snow is exceptional.

After many years of skiing at the local resorts and working as a patroller and cat driver, it became obvious to Tim Kuss that good skiers were becoming bored with the same old terrain. With the resorts becoming more crowded and high speed lifts pouring more skiers onto the trails, powder days have been reduced to hours. Skiers now scrounge for scraps of powder while their favorite stashes are long ago tracked by the masses. Backcountry skiing had always been a passion for Tim and with thousands of hours in the seat of a cat, this was the obvious vehicle to access and share real mountain experiences with skiers seeking the best possible skiing without the requisite slog into the backcountry.
