The Smoky Mountain Home Education Association (SMHEA) is a Christian led, non-profit service organization with membership open to all. We seek to promote home education by providing information and vital resources to all area home schoolers. SMHEA serves the families of eighteen counties surrounding and including Knox County, and is one of seven Tennessee regional organizations affiliated with the Tennessee Home Education Association. If you are not in the area served by SMHEA and are not sure which organization to contact, you can find your correct regional organization by consulting the link listed below. Home education is the fastest growing educational movement in the United States! It is a tutorial method of education in which parents retain the responsibility for their children's education. Home education extends far beyond mere academic knowledge and also encompasses a childs spiritual, moral, academic, and character training needs. As we live before our children, we discover that deeper needs are more frequently caught by our children than taught by us in an academic setting. Home education is a way of lifeand should be supported as close to the individual family as possible. To that end, dozens of local support groups are meeting in churches and communities throughout our area. They provide field trips, educational activities, seminars, social interaction, and a place to serve. We suggest that you seek out one of these groups as your primary source of encouragement.
