Description

My mom, Verna, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1997. She is shown above with me, in one of my favorite pictures of us together from my college graduation in 1999. Less than two months after becoming a grandmother for the first time, Verna went to the doctor about some problems she had been having with her speech. Immediately alarmed, her doctor sent her for an MRI, and that night she was in the hospital. She had surgery the following week to remove what we all hoped would be a benign tumor. We weren't so lucky, and shortly after the surgery we found out that she had a very serious grade of cancer (Grade 4 Glioblastoma). As a matter of fact, within 6 weeks of having the first tumor removed, another was back in its place. Given less than a year to live by her doctors, she battled for her life with courage and pride. Her positive attitude and strong will to live (along with an excellent caregiver, my father), carried her through the next six years, but Verna lost her battle with cancer in the summer of 2003. Very recent improvements in brain cancer treatments contributed to the success of the second surgery, and gave my family 6 years with my mom that we would not have had otherwise. By contributing to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, I hope to help them make greater strides in their search for better treatments and a cure. Skyfire Designs awareness jewelry serves two purposes. First, it raises money directly through the donations that I will make every time a piece is purchased. Second, every time a piece is noticed, it gives the person wearing it an opportunity to tell their story. It is imperitive that we continue to let others know that our lives have been affected by this disease. Visibility and public concern for a cause are key factors in fundraising potential.

Skyfire Designs was formed in January of 2004 and has been growing steadily ever since! Although my main focus is still promoting brain cancer awareness jewelry, I've found that there are many other causes that people want to support. Designs include brain cancer awareness jewelry (gray), breast cancer awareness jewelry (pink), colon/prostate awareness jewelry (blue), general cancer awareness jewelry (lavender), leukemia awareness jewelry (orange), lung cancer awareness jewelry (clear), ovarian/cervical/uterine awareness jewelry (teal), AIDS awareness jewelry (red), and yellow ribbon jewelry (support our troops!).
