Title
Sister Cities of Wapakoneta, Ohio, USA and Lengerich, Germany
Description
The concept of Sister City affiliations between the United States and other nations began shortly after the Second World War. It developed into a national initiative when then President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the People-To-People program at a White House Conference in 1956. President Eisenhower's intention was to lessen the chance of future world conflicts by involving people at all levels of our society in personal citizen diplomacy.
In Wapakoneta, preparations to organize a local chapter of Sister Cities were begun in 1991. The organizations first goal was to find a sister city. Input from local citizens suggested establishing ties with a city in Germany, to strengthen the ties with the ancestral history of many of the residents.
In 1992, a preliminary meeting was held between officials from Wapakoneta and Lengerich, Germany. Correspondence between the two cities began and interest in furthering the relationship was established.
