Chinthana Widanage has won a gold medal for Weightlifting at Commonwealth games in Australia on 17th March 2006. Further, it is reported that this is the first gold medal won by a Sri Lankan for weightlifting at a Commonwealth game.
On Wednesday around 12.30p.m. a parcel bomb was found in a passenger bus running from Wellampitiya to Kollupitiya. According to the information received from the bus commuters a suspicious parcel was found in the bus and it was handed over to Dematagoda Police Station. Thereafter, Bomb-squad attached to SL army was called immediately. They checked the suspicious parcel and after being confirmed that it was a bomb, it was taken to the nearby ground belongs to St. John's College Dematagoda and defused. No one was hurt said OIC Dematagoda Police Station.
A t least ten railway passengers have been injured due to a train accident took place at Kalutara Railway Station on Tuesday afternoon around 7.00pm. Head of the Main Controlling Room in Maradana Mr. Gunapala Withanage told that the Colombo bound Matara Express train collided with Colombo bound Galle train while it was stopped at Kalutara Railway Station. He further said that Minister A.H.M.Fowzie and General Manager of Railway have already visited the place where the accident took place and they have given necessary advices to the relevant authorities to commence a comprehensive investigation on the above accident to find out where the fault is.
