My name is Monica. I am a type 2 diabetic and weightloss surgery post-op. Let me tell you a little about how I started on this Journey. I'd been over weight since I was about 10 or so. I attribute it to a lot of emotional stress, one of which was the divorce of my parents and rape at a young age. Like many people, food became my choice for comfort. Through Jr. and Sr. Highschool, my weight increased. I was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when I was 14. At that time I was out of control. My blood sugar was through the roof and I was determined to eat whatever I wanted when I wanted. Soon I had to start pills to help control my blood sugar. Later, in my 20's I ended up taking multiple insulin shots daily. My weight continued to increase. Because of my weight and out of control diabetes, my health declined. I'd always had low immunity and it got worse. I was plagued with a plethora of health issues including high blood pressure and constant infections. Even though I had consulted nutritionist, I had a hard time following their strict advice. The amount of my insulin injections increased. At one point I was taking 4 shots daily. In 1999 I had a very serious health issue that required eight surgeries and a three month hospital stay. At that time my weight was well over 300lbs. While I did lose about 50lbs in the hospital, it didn't stay off becuase of the sedentary life I led after my hospital release. It was inevitable because of my health. My weight increased so much that no one knew how much I weighed becuase the standard doctor office scales couldn't weigh me. My emotional state grew so bad that I would lash out at the nurses and say things like, "I'm fat! you know I'm fat! the doctor knows I'm fat ... so just write FAT in my chart!" My health continued to decline while my weigh soared.
In 2000 my PCP doctor approaced me about weight loss surgery. He thought it was my only chance at survival. I think now that he was correct in that assessment. I had severe back pain such that I couldn't take more 10 steps at a time. I couldn't breathe. I had such high blood pressure that I was on 2 bp medications. My blood sugar was constantly out of control. I had been hospitalized sevral times for extremely high bloodsugar. And suring my illness in 1999, I suffered extreme internal damage to my kidneys. After a lot of consideration, research and conversations with a woman who'd had gastric bypass, I decided to go for it. It was later, after finding a doctor that I found out my weight: 415 lbs. That was almost 6yrs ago. Since then, I have NOT had to have a revision. I've had a baby, my kidneys improved (until my pregnancy), my blood pressure improved as did my blood sugar. I am not on any shots pills... totally diet controled.
