What is an actor, without a stage, without an audience? What is a director without a cast? Do these people simply cease to exist because there is nowhere to display their skills? This is a common problem with theatre in this day and age. There is simply not enough of it. Too few plays, too few opportunities, yet there is an abundance of talented individuals just screaming for that big break. God bless community theatre, but for many this is not enough. For a lot of theatre people, community theatre is just the first step in a long journey towards their dream. I have not come across many in my time in the theatre that would not jump at the chance to act professionally. There is only one difference that I can see between the non professional and the professional. The professional gets paid. There is so much undiscovered talent around that I felt I had to do something. Shoestring Theatre Company was that something.
Shoestring was my dream. By creating this theatre company it will enable me to tap into the vast talent that I have seen in community theatre and give those individuals a chance to shine at the highest level. This not only applies to actors and directors. I will be giving opportunities to lighting, sound, stage management, in fact all aspects of the theatre.
The hope of Shoestring is to bring the audience back to the theatre. Not enough people are placing bums in seats when it comes to live theatre today. Given the opportunity (geographically and financially) I believe that the audiences will come back, the stage once more will be lit and the director will have his cast. Places everyone. The show is about to commence.
