- Since my travels took me to the Southwest many years ago, I am always going back. When I am not able to live there, I paint "there". I love, and am constantly inspired by the interior architecture- adobe, rustic furniture, rich textiles, pottery of the earth, and much more. There is an elegant simplicity to the interiors, where people and nature live in harmony and respect. Nature provides the materials, and people shape that material into beautiful pottery, textiles, and furniture. I love painting interiors, and most of my paintings originate in my mind's eye. I will start with a piece of furniture, or an adobe architectural element such as a kiva fireplace. This will be the focal point of the interior, and I simply design the space around that. I often "think" in interiors, and will wait until my design is complete in my mind before I begin working. Once I have the space I am satisfied with, I sketch out the design directly on my pastel paper and start blocking in shapes, then colors. I love working with perspective,color,and shape. I often want to create a mood, by using natural lighting effects, such as the sun or maybe the moon. What is important to me is capturing the rustic beauty of the Southwest interior.
