Description
The Brownrigg business was founded in Egremont over 100 years ago by Johnnie Brownrigg who hired out horses and various types of carriages to local people. It was said at the time that Brownriggs had the best post horses in West Cumberland. The firm trades under the name of S. H. Brownrigg, and harks back to the days when Sam Brownrigg supplied horse-drawn carriages for weddings, funerals, and excursions. His son John or "Jackie" as his friends knew him was also involved in the business from an early age.
The company expanded and flourished during the 1930's and 40's when the motor charabanc was introduced and the Brownriggs moved with the times by buying Rolls Royce cars and Leyland and AEC touring coaches.
The family business continues as S. H Brownrigg Ltd. under the direction of Roy and Irene Cook, daughters Diane and Liza and son-in-law Brian.
