Once you tour the showroom and studio at Miriam's Well, it's easy to want to sign up for weaving classes. Lush jackets and shawls; skirts and coats made from hand-woven fabric display the owner's weaving know-how. Miriam Leith-Espensen opened her school and shop in 1999.

"I started out with one loom, and now I have 12," she said, sitting in the spacious foyer of her studio. She came to Santa Fe 14 years ago and worked as a production weaver for several studios in town. "Then I wanted my own place, but I couldn't afford the high rents here."

At the time, she was living in an apartment with a basement. With lots of work and ingenuity, she transformed the basement to a weaving studio. Looking back, she says, "My business started in the basement".
