Dharma Communications is the not-for-profit educational arm of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism. We provide products and services to assist people interested in spiritual practice, particularly those on the path of Zen. With our work, we strive to embody the spirit of right livelihood while utilizing modern technologies and long-tested forms of communication. The volunteer effort of lay practitioners, residents of Zen Mountain Monastery and monastics of the Order--the people who are Dharma Communications--is the expression of our dedication to spiritual practice. In this site, you will find not only a wide selection of supplies but also our wholehearted support for your journey.
Our challenge is to offer genuine support without creating or perpetuating an illusion of need. We want to recognize you as a spiritual practitioner, not a consumer. During the twenty-three years of attending to what is useful to authentic Zen practice, here at the Monastery and in the lives of thousands of lay practitioners throughout the world, we have seen that Dharma Communications has a significant impact on many people’s lives. That influence can be a product, a subtle inspiration, a bit of hard data, a mutual dedication to caretaking of details, a contact with another person on the path. There are no formulas here. There is complete commitment to waking up. There is deep listening and appropriate response.
The Monastery Store represents what we have learned so far. We continue to explore new ways to reach and meet you on the path, wherever you may find yourself, and to help you transform your home and life into a sanctuary of true spirit. We recognize the immense power of modern communication technologies and aim to use them to nourish rather than to poison. We understand that the atmosphere in which we are working effects what you are receiving, and so we carefully attend to all the details of our work as practice. We are always searching for new sources for our products that can lower the cost to you and lower the impact on the environment. We try to cultivate a personal relationship with the craftspeople and suppliers, collaborating on new designs. We also have learned that you are a key resource in the evolution of Dharma Communications, so we invite you to be involved, to let us know what isn’t working, what is, and what could work better. After all, this whole journey is about our clarity and the capacity to communicate and recognize the interconnections.
