What is YarnShifting?
Most weaving is done on a loom that uses individual strands of thread or yarn to form a warp. Additional thread or yarn is shuttled back and forth through the warp threads to form the weft. Traditional weaving takes a good deal of setup and special equipment to manage and control the warp threads.
YarnShifting is different. YarnShifting uses a continuous yarn or thread to form both the warp and the weft as you weave. Because YarnShifting works from both sides toward the center of the piece, the woven piece is symetrical in its design. The most common type of YarnShifting is a triangular shape. It is also known as a triangle loom or a Tri-Loom.
What is a YarnShifter?
A YarnShifter is a modular loom system that you can use to create fabrics using the YarnShifting technique. Because of the modular nature of the YarnShifter, you are not limited to triangles. You can YarnShift squares, rectangles, diamonds and more. You can work on smaller pieces that can be combined into larger works, or you can use the YarnShifter components to create large single pieces on their own.
