"Security Marketing" is the practice of using security seals and badges as tools for increasing visitor trust on a website. The theory is that raising trust converts to higher sales and profits. This practice is commonly referred to as "conversion". Normally this would not be a bad thing, except it has now become common practice to seek the reward and not the safety. The overwhelming majority of merchants do not actually examine the level or quality of the security system they have chosen. How safe is your site?... you don't really know... as long as it is perceived to be safe and visitors think it is and your sales are up... who cares?. This view was first introduced by the industry itself. Internet security companies have been offering ROI calculations to show how much more sales will increase by displaying their seal. Visit almost any security vendor's site and you will find a vast amount of the site's content is devoted to sales and marketing and "CONVERSION". Their main thrust is aimed at the merchant or site owner to buy their solution for the benefit of increasing sales. This is not right.
