The Academy began in 1989 as a series of workshops held in Santa Fe, Seattle and New York, created by artist Gary Faigin and architect Pamela Belyea.

In 1995, the school began operations year-round in Seattle with a variety of classes and workshops for artists of all levels of ability. The school became a nonprofit in 2000 and changed its name from the Academy of Realist Art to the Seattle Academy of Fine Art.
