A brief introduction to Southern California Quarterly Meeting
The Religious Society of Friends is a Christian denomination that began in England around 1650, and was established in North America, and in other countries, very soon after that. Members of the Society have called themselves "Quakers" from almost the beginning, or "Friends." No member will complain about the use of either term.
The fundamental unit of organization is usually called a meeting, of which the Society has two broad classes, defined in terms of their outward form of worship:
