Title

Scottish Fiddle Music

Description

Scots fiddle music encompasses tunes written in certain styles. The types of tune we cover on the site are; hornpipe, jig, march, reel, slow air and strathspey.

It's usual to play Scots fiddle music in 'sets'. If a set has been arranged for dancing then it will obviously follow a strict form. In this case it will also most likely be opened and closed with a chord to give a 'lead in' and a well rounded conclusion

If a set has been arranged for listening then pretty much anything that makes musical sense goes (although some traditionalists might debate that point). Try listening to some of the sets in the excellent recordings which we have selected in the resources pages. A fairly classic order for a solo fiddle set is; march, strathspey, reel. Unless a set is made up of slow airs you will often find that it starts and finishes with the same tune.
