School of Lost Borders
Description
We are a consortium of colleagues from various walks of life who, through study and life experiences, have learned many of the old ways. We come from many countries, many traditions. No strangers to seasoning in the underworld, we have given ourselves to the preservation of human life. In threshold worlds of solitude and emptiness, we have come to follow the common thread that leads through the labyrinth of personal, communal, national, and international change to maturation and the attainment of the potential to live and die well, on this earth, our mother.
Lost Borders is without borders. Although our headquarters have been in the Eastern Sierra of California for the last 20 years, our courses can now be found in many locales, from Death Valley and the Rocky Mountains to the moors and wildlands of other continents. Every course is a rite of passage, a border crossing from the past to the future, from the old to the new, from the outward to the inward, from the self to the Self.
There is an element of perceived risk in every course. Time alone in a natural place (solitude) and fasting (emptiness) and exposure to the elements (vulnerability), and self-reliance (self-trust), are the earmarks of Lost Borders. Certain old ways of learning, such as story telling, councils of “elders,” mirroring, four seasons teachings, and ways of empowerment, are also typical. The work of the teachers and guides involves the safe holding of an ancient container, a means of keeping the bridge steady as it were, as each student crosses a border unique to his/her own needs. The container is the course itself. Beyond the bridge lies the open road.
