SCANA serves over 600,000 electric customers and upwards of 1 million natural gas customers.

History

SCANA's origins can be traced back to Charleston, South Carolina in 1846. SCANA's first predecessor was Charleston Gas Light Company. Formed by local business leaders, the new company focused primarily on coal, oil, and resins. When the first gas street lights appeared in 1848, SCANA helped to catapult them into success by providing gas as well as laying gas lines. By 1889, every main street in the South Carolina capitol of Columbia had a gas main through the hard work of the Columbia Gas Light Company, which was formed in 1854.

In 1879, when the light bulb was invented, new electrical companies began cropping up to seize hold of the flourishing electrical energy market. In 1887, the Congaree Gas & Electric Company formed to provide energy to Columbia. These two basic and important predecessors, along with several other smaller companies such as the Charleston City Railway Company and the Columbia Water Power Company, would go on to help form the Broad River Power Company as a subsidiary of General Gas and Electric Corporation in 1924. In 1937, this flourishing company would change its name to South Carolina Electric and Gas Company and, 5 years later, merged with the Lexington Water Power Company to become even larger. South Carolina Electric and Gas continued to press on through the power industry while setting many precedents, including their becoming the first South Carolina based company to ever be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1946, the very same year that South Carolina Electric and Gas became an independent company.

Over the next forty years, South Carolina Electric and Gas would prove its resilience and strength. In 1950, the company merged with the South Carolina Power Company. In 1951, the South Carolina Generating Company was formed as a subsidiary company to build Urquhart Station. The very next year, an additional subsidiary company, the South Carolina Natural Gas Company, was formed to build gas lines and distribute natural gas. In 1959, SCE&G joined forces with three neighboring utility providers to build the very first nuclear power plant in the southeast United States. In 1963, SCE&G put in operation the Parr prototype reactor. In 1971, SCE&G began plans to build a nuclear plant two miles from the Parr reactor.

Finally, in January of 1982, SCE&G would merge with Carolina Energies, Inc. under the new name South Carolina Electric and Gas Company. Two years later, South Carolina Electric and Gas Company restructured and officially became SCANA, the same company that exists to provide natural gas and electrical energy to the south eastern United States modern day.
