In the Vietnam War, Sam flew F-4s. During his 25th combat mission, he was shot down over North Vietnam. Sam spent nearly seven years as a Prisoner of War (POW); three and a half of those years were spent in solitary confinement. Johnson's autobiography, Captive Warriors, details this experience. Sam's patriotism is unquestioned.
