Description
The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate this life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Established in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker, the foundation honors the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Komen Foundation is an international organization with 115 affiliates.
The Foundation runs one of the most innovative, responsive grant programs in breast cancer today. In addition to funding important local breast health projects, Komen San Antonio Affiliate serves as a resource for those seeking opportunities for screening and treatment, and raise awareness by educating the community about the benefits of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.
The San Antonio Affiliate of the Komen Foundation was founded in 1997. Since inception, our organization has donated more than $3.5 million in grants. In 2005-2006, Komen San Antonio Affiliate will contribute more than $750,000 for non-duplicative, community-based breast health education, screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved in Bexar County.
